In all cultures and in every recorded period of history philosophers have posited the idea of an underlying unity which integrates life and mitigates our human sense of separation. It is our minds that create separation and difference, even when our experience may demonstrate unity and connection.
DISTINCTION WITHOUT DIFFERENCES is the visual expression of my own personal yearning for connection combined with my interest in the history of ideas and formal study of Intellectual History. The paintings are hung in pairs, each pair containing symbols from a particular historical period or culture. There are visual references to written language in most of the paintings, and each is accompanied by a philosopher’s statement.
This series is homage to my father, a “big idea” man and a masterful connector.
